Dear Frugal Friend,

I wanted to write you a quick note of compassion and inspiration as you get ready to plunge into the Holidays. Starting last week I had received over 37 magazines and my inbox is cluttered with emails from on-line stores encouraging me to purchase their products and get free shipping! I know that if my life has been ramped up into over drive for Holiday Shopping, yours is probably even more intense.

I am writing today to ask you to breathe. That may sound silly, but we can get pretty worked up over the Holidays what with the expectations of others, the stress of our jobs, the pressures of television and movies to make “perfect” Holiday gatherings and then the financial stress of stretching the budget to create gifts for everyone on our list. Wow! No wonder we may be a bit tense!

So, the solution to our current challenges is to breathe. Become conscious of how tightly you are holding yourself. Become aware of the shallow breathing you are doing in the midst of your activities and I would like you to stop what you’re doing, take 5 seconds and breathe in deep through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. Do this calmly 3-4 times and you will see a significant change in your outlook.

If a peaceful calm doesn’t come to you after your short pause in life to breathe deeply, then you need drastic measures. Here you go:

1) Stop what you’re doing and sit down.
2) Sit with a straight back and tense every muscle in your body for 3 seconds
3) Then, relax everything, but still sit straight
4) Take a long deep breath in through your nose
5) Hold your breath for a count of 3
6) Exhale through your mouth twice using a Huh, huh sound.

I know if you do this exercise three times, you will find some peace amidst all this Holiday activity.

Continue to take care of yourself, Frugal Friend. The world needs people like you who are willing to take responsibility for their finances and are making little efforts every day to become financially stable. Keep up the excellent work and know that I’m here routing for you!!!

With warm regards,

Janine
